Freelance Developmental Editor

We help our clients Create, Publish and Market a book to grow their business. We have an exciting opportunity for a talented, dynamic Developmental Editor who can take transcripts from a series of interviews and turn them into a first draft manuscript for our Authors.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage and motivate authors through the Talk Your Book Interview process
  • Guide authors through the creative outline process
  • Proactively offer specific suggestions about the goals, underlying premise, narrative voice pacing, style and language to transform author’s manuscript into a book
  • Manage text length
  • Rewrite and restructure paragraphs and sentences to improve flow
  • Ensure consistent overall structure for the manuscript
  • Identify gaps in content and supply or describe the needed copy to the author
  • Edit the developing manuscript for first rough draft and subsequent line edit
  • Ensure manuscripts are completed on time, within budget and with high client satisfaction
  • Ensure that first-class quality standards are reflected in all aspects of the manuscript you are managing

The Ideal Candidate will have the following job qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years developmental editing and line editing experience
  • Book publishing experience a plus
  • Exceptional writing, editing, grammar, spelling and communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in your work
  • Working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines
  • Must have high level of competency in Microsoft Word and Track Changes
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a highly creative clientele
  • Ability to handle changing priorities in a deadline driven environment
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • World class customer service skills
  • Strong ability to engage and motivate clients to achieve their publishing goals
  • Excellent listening and interpretation skills and capacity for interactive collaboration with clients

Position is freelance and can be conducted remotely. Position reports to the Vice President of Publishing.
